Principal's Message, Winter 2013
I am truly thankful
for being able to be a part of such a wonderful school with students
and staff. My first semester here has been a true blessing to me and
my family. I want to thank everyone who has made this school “a
great place to be.”
I just wanted to again remind parents and students of areas where there
has been some confusion. If you have any questions about any of our
policies, please contact Mr. Moyle or Mr. Schreibeis at 463-6833. Thanks!
The 1st semester we had a real problem with students acting inappropriately
and disrespectful with a substitute. The following progression is being
used for all substitutes that are at YIS:
Warning (Verbal – to student or class)
Office – 1 day lunch bunch (think sheet #1) – Up to admin
if student returns to class that period
Office – 3 days lunch bunch (think sheet #2)
Office – Habitual Discipline Progression #1 (Please see last newsletter)
APEP will be assigned for any student that the admin deems necessary.
**Please note that all substitutes are essentially one teacher in this
progression. If a student is sent to the office for one substitute and
then another substitute the next day, that student will be on the next
step of the progression.
Students are only allowed to use electronic devices after school outside
or in a teacher’s classroom if they allow it. Any student using
their electronic device on campus when they are not supposed to will
have the following consequences:
1st Offense: Device is taken and returned to student at the end of the
2nd Offense: 1-5 days lunch bunch and device is taken and returned to
the parent at their earliest convenience. Student loses privileges for
90 days (device can be taken if seen that he/she has one).
3rd Offense: 1-3 days APEP and device is taken and returned to the parent
at their earliest convenience. Student loses device for the remainder
of the school year.
**If a student gets their phone taken away more than the 3 offenses,
2 days of APEP will be added onto the previous offense.
We have been having a problem with students writing on the bathroom
stalls. We are in the process right now of making this harder for students
to do. Please know that if a student gets caught (by handwriting, witnesses,
etc.) writing on the bathroom stalls, that they will be classified as
vandalizing the bathroom. The following are the consequences for vandalism:
1st Offense: 1-5 days lunch bunch or 1-5 days APEP; clean up required
by student; possible notification of law enforcement
2nd Offense: 1-7 days APEP; clean up required by student; possible notification
of law enforcement
3rd Offense: 5-10 days APEP; clean up required by student; possible
notification of law enforcement
**We are looking at trying to make it harder for student to write and
scratch things on the bathroom stalls. If anyone has any ideas, please
let Mr. Schreibeis know. Thanks!
If a student is late to class, these are the following consequences:
1st Offense: Warning
2nd Offense: 1 day Lunch Bunch
3rd Offense: 3 days Lunch Bunch
4th Offense: 1 day of APEP
**Please note that YIS will only excuse three tardies with an excuse
from the parent. Once the student comes in tardy with a 4th note to
excuse it, YIS will charge the student with an unexcused tardy.
State law requires that a written note is given to the school for documentation.
Once the student is back to school, the parent has 3 days to get a note
to the school. If a note is not received by the school in 3 days, the
student will be determined by YIS admin to have an unexcused absence
or truancy. Here are the consequences for truancies:
1st Offense: Time for Time – 1 period missed is 1 day of lunch
2nd Offense: 1-3 days APEP
3rd Offense: 3-5 days APEP, notify law enforcement, Habitual Truant
**Please note that we are going to do everything in our effort to not
have your child get a truancy. Here is the progression to try and get
the note from the student:
1st day without note: Pulled into the office and reminded
2nd day without note: Pulled into the office and given 1 day of lunch
3rd day without note: Pulled into the office and given another day of
4th day without note: Truancy
Students on the playground will need to follow all playground rules
and procedures. If you would like a list of the rules, please get one
in the office. Playing Rough while playing outside has been a problem.
When this happens, there is a possibility that the ball that they are
playing with will be taken away. If it is a personal ball, the ball
will be given to the office to be given back to the student or parent
at the end of the day.
On another note, when a student gets to school in the morning, they
are supposed to be in the appropriate area (7th/8th in playground by
lunch room and 5th/6th in the YIS playground). If students are seen
outside of those areas, those students will receive consequences for
not being where they are supposed to be.
We are trying to instill in our students the idea of professionalism.
Going to school is your student’s job and we want to teach them
how to dress appropriately for their job. Also, the YIS dress code is
in effect for all YIS activities including but not limited to: Band/Choir
Concerts, School Pictures, Dances, etc. Students will be removed from
the event if the dress code is not followed.
Here is a list of items that are not acceptable to wear:
“I love boobies” or “I love TaTas” bracelets
– if students want to support breast cancer, please have them
wear the multiple other bracelets that don’t have these two sayings
No tears or holes in jeans or shirts.
Shorts have to be fingertip or mid-thigh in length.
No spaghetti strap shirts – shirt straps have to be 1 ½
inches in width.
No undergarments showing – the only exception would be if the
garment underneath meets dress code if worn by itself.
Shirts that reveal/expose cleavage or torso
No strapless shirts or halter tops
Hats, hoods, bandannas, and pajama pants
Inappropriate messages on clothing
1st Offense: Warning and clothing is corrected (wear school gear that
is professionally laundered)
2nd Offense: 1-5 days Lunch Bunch and clothing is corrected –
3rd Offense: 1-3 days APEP and clothing is corrected – Call home
**All clothing must be returned by the end of the day or the start of
the next school day or the student will have 1 day of lunch bunch for
every day we don’t get it back.
